If you’re gearing up for the CompTIA Network+ certification, you’re likely aware that a new version of the exam is on the horizon. This summer, the Network+ N10-009 exam is set to launch on June 20th, 2024. As always, with a new version comes a wave of questions about the differences between the old and new exams and which one you should take. In this blog, you’ll discover the key differences between the Network+ N10-008 and N10-009 exams and get guidance on which one might be right for you, depending on where you are in your study journey.

What Are the Network+ Certification Exams?

Before diving into the differences, let's understand what these exams aim to assess. The CompTIA Network+ certification is designed to validate your knowledge and skills in network connectivity, security, and management. Both the N10-008 and N10-009 versions test your ability to handle wired and wireless network devices, maintain network documentation, and implement robust security measures.

These core skills are crucial for various roles in technology administration. However, as technology evolves, so do the demands of these roles, leading to periodic updates in the certification exams as well as the materials used to study for these exams.

What’s New in N10-009?

1. Emphasis on Emerging Technologies:
The N10-009 exam reflects the latest trends and technologies in the networking world. Expect a stronger focus on advanced network security and new networking standards, which are vital for modern network environments. This shift prepares candidates for the complexities of today's and tomorrow's network challenges.

2. Updated Content and Topics:
Since the N10-008 was released in 2021, the industry has seen significant advancements. The N10-009 exam includes updated topics, such as network security and troubleshooting methodologies, which are more relevant to current networking needs. You’ll delve deeper into cloud technologies, software-defined networks (SDN), data center architectures, and IPv6 specifics.

3. Modern Network Use Cases:
Another highlight of the N10-009 is its coverage of evolving use cases for modern networking environments. Whether it's physical installations or sophisticated virtual networks, this version ensures you’re equipped with the knowledge to handle these scenarios effectively.

Should You Take N10-008 or N10-009?

With the N10-009 release imminent, you might be wondering whether to stick with the N10-008 or switch to the new version. Here’s a breakdown to help you decide:

Stick with N10-008 If:

  • You’re Close to Exam-Ready: If you’ve already invested significant time studying for the N10-008 and plan to take the exam soon, it makes sense to continue with this version. Just ensure you complete your certification before the N10-008 retires at the end of 2024.
  • You Have the Materials: If you have already purchased the N10-008 study guides and practice exams, switching now might mean extra costs and effort.
  • Keep In Mind: CompTIA offers a six-month overlap period. So If you have studied for the N10-008, you can still take that version of the test until December. Once the N10-009 is released, if you plan to sit for the test, you will just need to make sure you select the correct exam based on what you've prepared for.

Switch to N10-009 If:

  • You’re Just Starting: If you haven’t begun studying yet, it’s advisable to wait for the N10-009 materials. Studying the latest version will ensure you’re up-to-date with the most recent technologies and trends.
  • You Have Time to Prepare: If you’re not in a rush and can afford to start your preparation afresh, going with the N10-009 can give you a head start on the latest knowledge.

While there are new elements in the N10-009, about 80% of the content overlaps with the N10-008. This means if you’ve started with the N10-008 and find yourself transitioning to the N10-009, much of your knowledge remains applicable. However, it's crucial to bridge any gaps by taking practice exams tailored specifically to the N10-009 to cover any new material. It's understandable to feel frustrated with these updates, but it's important to remember that CompTIA updates its exams every three years to stay aligned with industry developments. This ensures that your certification remains relevant and respected in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
